FM27 Day One: A Better Football Manager, But Not a Free Pass
The first-night verdict on FM27: a far better interface, a more enjoyable match experience, and some familiar problems that still need fixing.
FM27 is finally playable, and the first reaction from the Football Manager community is something we haven't heard very often lately: people are actually enjoying themselves.
That matters. After FM26, even getting players to feel comfortable opening a new save was going to be a challenge. But we shouldn't confuse relief with a finished job. “Better than FM26” is a pretty low bar for a series that used to eat entire weekends.
Sports Interactive opened the FM27 Launch Preview at 6pm GMT on Thursday, 29 October. It's free to play on PC and Mac until 3 November, with the full release due on 10 November. We've gone through the first-night discussion in the SI forums, Steam conversations, Reddit reaction and specialist previews. This is a community-based first impression, not a claim that we've tested five seasons ourselves.
THE INTERFACE: FINALLY GETTING OUT OF THE WAY
The clearest positive is the interface. Players are finding their way around more easily, familiar options are returning, and screens are putting more information where you expect to see it. That may not sound exciting, but FM lives and dies by how quickly you can move between a scout report, a player's contract and the tactics screen.
A few of the first-night posts are practically sighs of relief. One player on the official forum said FM27 felt familiar again after skipping most of FM26. Another enjoyed being able to follow a full match without fighting the interface.
But “improved” doesn't mean “sorted”. The same thread contains complaints about cramped squad columns, text clipping, inconsistent spacing, colour overload and sluggish transitions between menus. A player trying to recreate an old FM24 squad view reported columns disappearing as others were added. If you spend most of your time in tables and player profiles, these little annoyances add up quickly.
There was also a useful reminder not to believe every bug report at first glance: a player who thought the bookmark bar was too restrictive found an icons-only option after someone explained where it was. Sometimes the feature is missing. Sometimes FM is just doing a poor job of telling you it's there.
THE MATCH ENGINE: ENCOURAGING, WITH A BIG QUESTION MARK
This is where the debate gets interesting. One first-night forum contributor described loading an FM26 save into FM27, switching to a full match and getting so absorbed they changed camera angles simply to watch the football. That's exactly the kind of reaction Sports Interactive needed.
The improvements to animations, the feel of matchday and the new Tactical Tweaks system are giving players something to work with. Earlier hands-on previews also praised the way football-world information is presented between matches.
Still, I'm not ready to accept the match engine as fixed because the first few games look good. There are already reports of defensive blocks losing shape, players getting in each other's way and questionable movement without the ball. Another player was worried that opposition teams didn't seem to change formation during matches. One reported seven disallowed goals across four fixtures, although others rightly asked whether the tactical setup could explain it.
Those are interesting warning signs, not proof that everyone will experience the same thing. Watching a handful of highlights isn't enough to judge defensive balance or AI tactics. We need proper time with different formations, levels and longer saves.
THE BUGS: NOT EVERYONE HAS THE SAME FIRST NIGHT
For some players, FM27 has started smoothly. For others, the first tactical decision was whether to keep trying to launch it.
A Steam thread documents multiple users getting stuck on the loading screen or watching the game close before reaching the menu. SEGA support staff responded with troubleshooting advice and directed affected players towards support tickets. That is a real launch problem, even if we don't yet know how common it is.
There was also a separate Steam activation problem for some pre-order customers who saw a “Game not released” message. SEGA acknowledged that and marked it resolved on 29 October.
On the SI forum, players reported teams they couldn't easily select when starting a career. Staff and other users pointed to mouse-wheel and trackpad scrolling, while a bug-tracker report was raised. A more worrying individual account described a multiplayer save stuck around Champions League squad registration, with saving unavailable. That deserves investigation, but one detailed report isn't enough to call it a widespread game-breaking bug.
The distinction matters. A badly aligned button is annoying. A save that cannot progress is something else entirely.
OLD FEATURES AND OLD FRUSTRATIONS
Not everything can be fixed with prettier menus. Players are still asking for proper control of youth-team tactics and line-ups. One forum user said that discovering this was still missing was enough to uninstall. Another pointed out the continued limitations around scheduling several friendlies, tours and friendly cups.
And let's not pretend that bringing back something we had years ago automatically makes it a brilliant new feature. It's good when FM restores useful tools. It would have been better not to lose them.
Press conferences, assistant advice and some of the small management interactions also remain areas of frustration in early creator and journalist previews. These aren't glamorous talking points, but they are the stuff you repeatedly click through in a 20-season save.
SO WHAT'S THE VERDICT?
The tone has changed, and that's worth acknowledging. Among the feedback we've examined, the first-night comments sound much more hopeful than the conversations surrounding FM26. The interface is the main reason. Matchday is beginning to feel like something players want to watch instead of rush through.
But the mood isn't unanimous. Steam's launch-crash thread is hard to ignore, and the complaints about youth management, UI customisation and defensive behaviour aren't coming out of nowhere.
There isn't a trustworthy Day 1 public poll that tells us exactly what percentage of players love or hate FM27. Reddit upvotes on pre-launch announcements aren't a satisfaction score, and positive creator previews aren't interchangeable with thousands of ordinary players finishing their own saves.
So no numerical rating yet. A few hours is enough to spot a better interface or an obvious bug; it isn't enough to know how the transfer AI behaves after four windows, how newgens develop or whether the match engine holds up across a whole season.
My Day 1 verdict? FM27 has earned a second look. It hasn't earned a free pass.
After the disappointment of FM26, that's still a good start. Now the real test begins: does it stay enjoyable when the novelty wears off and you're three seasons deep into a save you actually care about?
